History of Oxenford.

The suburb of Oxenford, was named after William Robert Oxenford, who purchased 225 acres to build and managed the railway station that is today the Oxenford Tavern. Before 1930, when the road bridge crossing the Coomera River was complete, a ferry provided the only option for crossing. On either side of the river that the ferry used, hotels were built to serve and refresh waiting travellers, and from this small community development began to sprawl towards the South West. Soon a church, post office, two banks, and a number of other businesses opened alongside the highway at the time, currently the service road. Cashing in on the residents from Brisbane who would regularly visit the area to watch horse races held in the area.

Over the years as the Gold Coast continued to further develop, Oxenford and surrounding areas saw rapid growth. If you compare the years of Census, since 1995 there has been a massive increase in the local population. As the area begins to fill out and the last unbuilt blocks are bought and built upon, the suburb of Oxenford is expected to see a sharp increase in the average value of homes in the area. This is a common sight to see, especially on the Gold Coast. As large land developments evolve through their cycles, so does the local property market demand.

It would be fair to say that being set anywhere between the Gold Coast and Brisbane gives you the most job opportunity than anywhere else in Queensland.

Today, the average lifestyle for those living in Oxenford is much less harsh than it was in the days of dairy farming. With data showing most residents are between 30-40, the average age of those in the area is perfectly balanced and full of people in all age groups. It’s a great place for many families to raise their loved ones in a peaceful setting. With so many parks scattered throughout the suburb, every afternoon you’ll find plenty of Oxenford residents walking and catching up with each other. Oxenford Population Growth (1911-2011)

Between 1980 and 2000, as interest has increased dramatically in the area, setting up the suburb for the amazing growth over the last 20 years. Oxenford has become a successfully designed suburb in many ways.

This long-term growth is clearly reflected in population data. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics Estimated Resident Population (ERP) figures, the Oxenford–Maudsland area recorded approximately 11,680 residents in 2006. By 2015, the population had grown to around 15,548, reflecting steady expansion as housing development continued throughout the northern Gold Coast corridor.

Growth accelerated further over the following decade. By 2020, the population had increased to approximately 17,902, and by 2025, the Estimated Resident Population reached close to 19,732 residents. This represents growth of more than 8,000 additional residents since 2006 — an increase of roughly 70% over 19 years.

The consistent upward trend highlights the area’s ongoing appeal, supported by improved infrastructure, proximity to the M1, retail expansion, schooling options and lifestyle amenities. With continued development in surrounding Maudsland and the broader northern Gold Coast growth corridor, Oxenford remains positioned as a key residential hub within the region.

Schools in Oxenford.

Oxenford is highly popular for families with access to plenty of facilities and well-regarded schools in the local area.

Oxenford State Primary School.

Oxenford State Primary School is located at 90 Michigan Drive, Oxenford, was one of the first schools in the area to help take in the ever-growing population in the area. In 2025, the school had 520 students and 40 teachers.

Gaven State School.

Located on Universal Street, Oxenford. Gaven State Primary School is the other school located in the area. With slightly more students and teachers, 694 and 50 respectively. The school has stayed open over the years, surprising general opinions as the locality of Gaven is slowly made smaller and smaller.

Oxenford Shopping Districts

Oxenford Main Business District.

As you come into Oxenford from the main highway (exit 58), you’ll drive straight past the massive Oxenford Home Centre. With massively sized Kmart, Bunnings, Aldi, Woolworths, Rebel, Repco, and Supercheap. Plus an array of industrial small businesses surrounding the centre. The older section of the shopping development slightly to the south is full of plenty of smaller businesses run by local residents. As well as restaurants, op shops, and Woolworths Oxenford. There is also the massive Home World multi-business development just across the highway. Here you can find plenty of homeware stores such as JB-HI-FI, The Good Guys, Pillowtalk, Fantastic Furniture, Chemist Warehouse, and many more. Home World Helensvale also has a number of cafes and restaurants, with one of the best sushi shops on the Gold Coast, Tama-ya Japanese. As well as The Coffee Club, Kebabs, Takeaway Pizza, and Thai.
 

Studio Village Shopping Centre.

A convenient section of business for some of the first developed homes in Oxenford. You’ll find a small group of quiet cafes, bakery, chemist, and other small businesses here. Locally run by residents of the area, this smaller shopping centre has much more of a community feel.
 

West Oxenford Shopping Village.

A lovely spot to spend a Saturday morning with your partner for breakfast at one of the cafes, or take some freshly baked bread rolls from the bakery down to Oxenford Lake, with John Siganto park with a boat ramp is just around the corner.

In the last 30 years, as the old local industry of dairy farming moves further away to account for the demand for closer living, more and more housing estates have begun to spring up all around the area. From Village Studio, one of the first, to Coomera Rivage,  Huntington Rise, Highland Reserve, and Riverstone Crossing.

The developments over the years in Oxenford came much sooner than most around the Gold Coast, and in an unexpected way have ended up being just as sought after as the much more expensive and modern homes. This is mainly because of the natural beauty and location of Oxenford. But also to the way the area was residentially zoned.

One of the greatest buying points for the suburb is the availability of acreage without the need to drive too far from the highway. If you were looking for another opportunity to buy such large parcels of land without the need to drive over 30 minutes to get to work, you’ll be hard stuck to find somewhere to buy outside of Oxenford. Some other suburbs worth looking into would be Maudsland, Willowvale, and Jacob’s Well. All of which are nowhere near as conveniently positioned to the Gold Coast.
